Dr. Erin Mason
Erin Mason is an assistant professor in the Counseling program at DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois. Prior to joining the faculty in 2008, Erin was a Professional School Counselor in Georgia for 13 years. Erin worked in several middle schools in urban, suburban and rural settings, including in the two largest districts in the state. While in her role as a school counselor, Erin was active in the state school counseling organization, serving as the ASCA National Model implementation chair, journal editor and government relations chair. Due in part to her early work in lobbying the state legislature between 2002 and 2008, Georgia has received legislative and appropriations support of a bill that will improve the student to school counselor ratio over the next several years. Erin earned her Masters, Specialist and Doctoral degrees from Georgia State University. Erin received numerous awards during her time in Georgia including Gwinnett County Middle School Counselor of the Year, Chi Sigma Iota’s Outstanding Practitioner and ACA’s Perkins Government Relations Award.
Currently, Erin is active in professional School Counseling organizations and legislative work at both state and national levels. Erin served as the 2012-2013 president of the Illinois School Counseling Association. In Illinois school counselors and departments regularly call upon her for consultation, especially on topics including technology, comprehensive school counseling programs and RAMP. Erin was one of 15 national Lead RAMP reviewers for the American School Counselor Association for 4 years. Her work in the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) has resulted in the implementation of an elementary school level “ASCA model cohort” in which volunteer school counselors network together to improve data driven practices in their schools. Erin has received several awards from CPS as a “college partner.”
Erin has published in various scholarly journals with a focus on the professional identity of school counselors, specifically on topics such as leadership, social justice and equity. Several of these publications have been cited in key works such as the ASCA National Model, 3rd and The College Board’s 2012 School Counselors Literature and Landscape Review. She also seeks to reach school administrators and to that end has published in journals like the National Association for Secondary School Principals Bulletin and Education Administration Quarterly. Additionally, Erin is keen on reaching practitioners so she has published in ASCA’s School Counselor magazine and maintains an active presence with her school counseling professional learning community on Twitter and through other social media. Erin is a regular presenter locally and at state and national conferences. Erin is also co-author of a book with Corwin Press, 101 Solutions for School Counselors and Leaders in Challenging Times. Of late, Erin’s research and presentations have turned to technology integration into school counseling practice and she is conducting research and writing grants to support a site established in 2011, School Counselors’ Online Professional Exchange (SCOPE) found at: http://www.scope4scs.org.
